GETTING STARTED

Vision Board for Sewing Ideas

Inspiration Board

An inspiration board gives you something to work off of. You can collect images and color palettes of your liking.

What to add in an Inspiration Board?

Before starting to sew, it's best to create your personal sewing goals to refer back to when you get stuck. Here are several prompts to start off with.

  • What's my style? What do I naturally gravitate toward?
  • What colors do I like?
  • What types of fabrics do I normally wear? Cotton? Blends?
  • What don't I have in my wardrobe? Am I looking to branch out?
Bolts of Fabric

Fabric

For beginners, it's important to choose the right fabrics for your sewing project. Mostly for staying within budget and for easy execution.

Fabric Choices

Beginner Friendly Fabrics

  • Cotton
  • Linen/linen blends
  • Chambray
  • Flannel
  • Muslin

Note: These fabrics are easier to work with because they don't move around under the sewing machine, and they hold their shape.

Advanced Fabrics

  • Silks
  • Wool
  • Poly-blends
  • Rayon
  • Lace
Sewing Supplies

Sewing Supplies

If you aren't willing to invest in a high-end sewing machine, here are some basic supplies you can purchase before fully committing.

Cost Effective Beginner Supplies
  • Fabric Cutting scissors* (used only for cutting fabric)
  • Regular scissors
  • Sewing Needles
  • Polyester thread (usually more durable than cotton thread)
  • Seam ripper
  • Chalk (for markups on fabric)
  • Ruler and Tape measure
  • Pins (to hold fabric in place)
  • Pin cushion (to hold pins when not in use)
  • Patterns (Digitial vs Paper)

*If you use scissors to cut both fabric and paper, it will dull the blades and ruin your fabric when you go to cut into it.

Finding Patterns

Simplicity is a well-known pattern company that sells patterns from many different brands. However, without spending over $20 on a pattern, you can find budget-friendly alternatives by thrifting, opting for digital patterns, or searching on other platforms (such as Etsy or eBay).
